What is this “Gravatar” thing? I was going to add my location to the map, but I am not sure how Gravatar ended up with my email – it shows a photo of some bearded old man? I do not want to sign up for something else, and I do not want this image. I can’t find a way to remove it. Thank you for any light you can shed!

I’m having the same problem with Gravatar and I’ve emailed their support. I don’t remember ever signing up with them but I can’t login and change it and don’t know how they chose the image that LC is using.

Ok, sorry for the confusion, this is a actually a Letterpress Commons issue, not a problem with Gravatar itself. Gravatar is just a free universal avatar system on websites that support it. You can read more at gravatar.com.
First, let me say that the avatars are not currently implemented for people on the map. The old bearded man won’t show up anywhere but behind your password on your account page. Perhaps this is confusing, so sorry! It will only show up if you become the author of an article or contribute substantially to an article, in which case you’d see it at the bottom of that article. You don’t need to worry about it showing up if you’re just signing up for the map or making minor edits throughout the site.
Secondly, you are looking at William Morris, father of the private press movement. I have set the avatar on Letterpress Commons to show William for anyone who’s not yet set up their own Gravatar. OK, I did this for giggles, but sorry if it’s confusing. 😉

Dan, thank you for responding. So glad to know I was not the only one with this concern! 🙂
Harold, thank you for explaining what is going on (and for moving my post into a new topic!) I knew the man looked familiar but I thought “…he is not Sigmund Freud…he is not Walt Whitman…” LOL
I will go add my info to the map now that I understand it won’t mislead anyone. 🙂
Happy New Year! 🙂
